The Mediskills Standard Scope Trainer designed to meet the needs of basic and intermediate endoscopic skills training. It can be used to teach all aspects of rigid and flexible ureteroscopy, including ureteric access, stone fragmentation and retrieval as well as post-procedural stent placement.

Incorporating such features as distensible bladder, a realistic ureteric orifice and ureters which follow the normal anatomical course, the Standard Scope Trainer provides a realistic alternative to learning in patients and presents the trainee endourologist with an opportunity to manage simple and complex stone procedures in a hygienic, life like situation, without the contaniation risks associated with the use of animal tissue.

In addition to enabling the trainee to practice ureteric stone fragmentation and retrieval of fragments, the trainee acquires the three dimensional skills and interpretation of scope movement required for successful flexible ureteroscopy. The six calices (three anterior and three posterior) all contain stones thus allowing development of the skills required for in vivo flexible ureteroscopy through stone fragmentation and retrieval. The presence of a small caliceal tumour enables the operative skills of tumour biopsy to be acquired.

The Standard Scope Trainer is suitable for practising flexible cystoscopy, stent insertion and removal techniques because the bladder as well as both distal ureters feature lifelike urothelium . The model can be used in a dry skills lab setting or incorporated into an operating theatre; it can be used with any endoscopic instruments, stone retrieval and fragmentation devices which makes it suitable for use in developing team working in the operating room environment. The hardness of the stones incorporated in both models ensures that the traineehas ample opportunity to use a variety of stone fragmentation devices.

When used in the operating theatre, clinical scenarios can be developed, ensuring familiarisation with instruments and endoscopic procedures by all members of the team which can result in significant time saving. This is in addition to as other cost saving through the potential to reduce damage to instruments by personnel who are unfamiliar with them as well as the potential to reduce waste by reducing the likelihood of opening inappropriate consumables due to lack of familiarity with the surgeons needs.
